The other day, I was speaking with one of my clients – we’ll call him Josh. Normally sharp, engaged, and quick to laugh, Josh seemed dulled. Flat. His spark was missing.
Rather than say, “You look tired,” because let’s be honest – that never lands well, I simply asked, “What’s been happening Josh?”
What followed was an all too familiar story.
Josh wasn’t just tired. He was running on empty. The pressure from his team, his boss, and their boss was relentless. His inbox had ballooned to over 1,200 unread emails. A recent illness meant he’d missed nearly four days of work and now felt buried. His energy was low, and as we spoke, it became clear: his sense of purpose had gone missing too.
This wasn’t just about being behind on emails. It was about leadership energy, and being disconnected from why he was doing the work in the first place.

Why Purpose Drives Energy
It’s easy to assume that more rest or better routines will restore our energy. But energy isn’t just physical – it’s emotional, mental, and deeply tied to meaning.
This is also explored in: Energised or Exhausted: Leading Through Change.
When we are clear on why we’re doing something, energy becomes self-renewing. Purpose doesn’t eliminate the load – but it gives us a reason to carry it.
Think about it:
- Why we’re in the job we’re in.
- Why we’re choosing to have that conversation.
- Why we say yes to some things and no to others.
- Why we’re studying, writing, building, or stepping back.
- Why we care.
When the why is clear, energy flows. But when it’s fuzzy or absent, even small tasks feel heavy.
Energy Is About Meaning, Not Just Time
Consider the difference:

Energy is not just about managing time – it’s about managing meaning. It’s about what fuels you, not just what fills your calendar.
Leading With Energy
Your energy shapes your leadership more than any strategy. It sets the emotional tone. It either steadies or shakes your team.
When you lead from purpose, people notice. You’re clearer. Calmer. More grounded.
But when you’re reacting, disconnected, or quietly burning out, your team feels that too – even if no one names it.
So here’s your leadership challenge. Ask yourself:
- Why am I doing this work right now?
- What’s the deeper intention behind this project, this meeting, this role?
- Where has purpose taken a back seat – and what would it take to bring it forward again?
You don’t need to overhaul everything. You just need a reason.
Because when purpose is present, energy follows. And when energy flows, momentum builds.
The Deliberate Accelerator
This week, check in with yourself or your team. Choose one area – your role, a project, a routine – and ask: “What’s the real why here?”
You don’t need a big plan. Just a clear reason. That’s where energy begins.
For leaders wanting to reconnect purpose with action, Our Leadership Development training can support that work in a practical, focused way.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Leadership Energy?
Leadership energy is the emotional, mental and physical capacity a leader brings to their work. It influences clarity, presence, decision-making and team momentum.
Why Does Purpose Affect A Leader’s Energy?
Purpose gives meaning to the load. It does not remove pressure, but it helps leaders reconnect with why the work matters.
Can Rest Alone Restore Leadership Energy?
Rest can help, but it may not be enough. When energy is tied to disconnection or loss of meaning, leaders also need to revisit their reason.
How Does A Leader’s Energy Affect Their Team?
A leader’s energy sets the emotional tone. When leaders are grounded and clear, teams often feel steadier. When leaders are depleted, teams can feel that too.
How Can Leaders Reconnect With Their Purpose?
Start by asking what the real why is behind a role, project or routine. A clear reason can restore focus and rebuild momentum.
