You’re Just Carrying More Than Usual

I was talking with a manager recently who told me she was fine. Nothing was falling apart, her team was hitting deadlines, nobody was complaining. But when I asked how she was actually doing, she said it felt “heavier than it should.”

That is not burnout, and it is definitely not failing. She was still showing up, still getting things done. What had shifted was the space around all of it. Less patience when someone asked a question she would normally have time for. Less energy left for the one-on-one that actually needed her full attention. Less room to think before reacting.

If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it and you are not doing it wrong. Leading a team day to day pulls on more than just your time. It is easy to assume the fix is better time management, or just pushing through. Sometimes that helps a little. But it rarely gets to what is really going on, because leadership pressure does not come from one place.

It helps to think about it across three areas: energy, performance and relationships. How you are managing yourself. How you are getting results through your team. And how you are building the trust that makes the first two actually work. They are not separate boxes. They lean on each other.

When your energy is running low, you make faster, thinner decisions. You are shorter in conversations you would normally handle well. That affects how your team experiences you, which affects the trust between you, which eventually shows up in how well things actually get done. None of this happens overnight. It builds in small moments, until one day you notice you are more reactive than you used to be.

So it is worth asking yourself: which of the three is under the most pressure right now? Is it that you are running on empty? Is it that the results are not quite landing despite the effort? Or is it that a relationship on your team, maybe with someone who is not performing, or someone you have been avoiding a conversation with, has gone off track? Usually it is not all three. Usually there is one that, if you paid attention to it, would ease the other two.

That is exactly what the Energy, Performance & Relationships Leadership Diagnostic is designed to help you see. It takes five minutes, and it gives you a snapshot of where things are sitting so you are not guessing, or trying to fix everything at once.

Give yourself the five minutes. You might already know the answer, but it helps to see it in black and white.

If leadership has felt heavier lately, take five minutes for the diagnostic and see what it points to first. Take the diagnostic here.
