Results Focused –
Staying on the Bigger Picture

I once worked with a team who described themselves as “busy every day.” Yet when I asked how their work connected to their organisation’s bigger goals, the room fell silent.

It wasn’t that they weren’t working hard – they were working constantly. But they’d lost sight of why their work mattered. The to-do list had replaced the purpose.

Deliberate teams stay results focused – not just activity focused. They pause to ask, “Does this move us closer to what really matters?” They measure progress, keep the vision visible, and stay motivated by purpose rather than pressure.

Drucker (1999) once said, “What gets measured, gets managed.” Research backs this up – teams with clear visibility of goals and outcomes are not only more aligned, they’re more engaged (Kaplan & Norton, 2004).

Tips for Leaders

  • Share the ‘why’. Keep connecting everyday work to the bigger picture.

  • Keep score visible. Progress motivates — make it easy to see.

  • Celebrate collective results. Recognise shared wins, not just individual effort.

Tips for Teams

  • Ask: “How does this task connect to our purpose?”

  • Track results together. Shared ownership fuels accountability.

  • Celebrate milestones. Small wins remind everyone of the journey.

When teams see their impact clearly, energy shifts – from ticking boxes to creating outcomes that matter.

Staying results focused isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what counts.
